We humans have come a long way and we are still evolving. Though we seldom realise the latter fact. Also it doesn’t go well with most the fact that ‘we’ are just one of the several million species on earth today. We are JUST one of them!
But the progress that we have made, especially in the last 1000 years, more so in last 100 years, has created a huge sense of departure from the nature. Much due to the very engineering of Homo Sapiens and rest due to the very powerful brain that we have got. This evolution of mankind could broadly be phased into:
- Physical
- Cerebral
- Emotional
Inherently weaker than our close cousins and others in the animal kingdom, humans were never designed to kill or chase or attack. And hence nature endowed us with the rich faculties of Thinking (Cerebral) and Feeling (Emotional). Well equipped with these three assets, we have transformed the world around us and impacted the nature (irreversibly). Continue reading ‘Physical –> Cerebral –> Emotional’
Remember the last time you went to a doctor? What did you start with- a problem or a symptom? I am having a severe headache… a bruise in the arm… pain in the jaw… sleepless nights… low concentration…
Of course, all these are symptoms.
One can’t expect an average mortal to know what causes all these aches and bruises and those sleepless nights.
But what do you think a doctor does? Does she directly give you a drug here based purely on ‘your’ alleged symptoms or does she identify the real problem?
I believe (and hope) that she does the latter. She gleefully takes out the most valuable tool of her arsenal (the stethoscope) and examines you. If needed asks for a few tests and only then does she prescribe a solution (a drug).
In essence- she drills down from the symptom to the problem to identify (or create) a solution.
But that’s not always the case in business! Surprised? Then read on… Continue reading ‘Apply Thought before you Apply Engineering!’
It is often realized that while our educational journey impresses upon THINKING, most of our decisions aren’t driven by that along. Our decisions are based on as much EMOTIONS (if not more) as LOGIC. Over the years our mental faculty is built with definitions, equations, algorithms, and plane logic. Even the exam system tests very much the same ability of ours- given a problem how well can we solve using the EXISTING KNOWLEDGE BASE. Here LOGIC is preeminent. And hence many end-up with a miserable life just to realize that -LOGIC is no all.
Looking at our brain which is composed of the Left and the Right hemispheres, each is endowed with a specific task. The Right section Feels, while the Left section Thinks. Not surprisingly, our education doesn’t impress upon the Feeling Brain (as much) and hence the problem.
Let me depict this through a story!

Kunal is the hero of our story. A young student at one of the coveted Engineering Colleges in India. It took him all his hard work, ‘Problem Solving Skills’ and indeed some luck (which he doesn’t accept) to make it to this institution. Continue reading ‘Thinking + Feeling’
With the elections in India coming to an almost decisive conclusion the ones interested would look back and see what worked and what didn’t. This would be an interesting area of study considering India is the largest democracy and the numbers are mind boggling. The 2009 Lok Sabha elections held in India had about 828,804 Polling Stations, 714 million voters, 1.4 million voting machine, and security personnel numbering over two million. 7 National parties, 32 state parties and over 1000 registered parties were in the fray. These numbers are approximations and you may refer to the various media sites or government sites for accurate details. The campaigns run during the elections, were in a sense social networking at work! This brings us to the topic of this post.
For us, being a Global Employer with our corporate office in Bangalore (Bengaluru) we look at the wide population of suitable candidates all across the globe who could be potential Wiproites and wonder- How do we reach out, how we stay in touch?
Did you know you could keep in touch with us on Facebook and Twitter too? We are now pleased to share with you that we have a presence on Facebook for those interested in careers with Wipro. You are welcome to join the page as fans and await updates from us on the page. You can click here to view the page. Go on, spread the word.

One Billion Votes campaign comes to Wipro campus
Voting is a fundamental responsibility of every citizen and the Jaago Re! launch held at Wipro’s Electronics City campus on 18th November, 2008, re-emphasized this fact. Jaago Re! One Million Votes movement that seeks to awaken the citizens of India to the importance of voting and enable them to register for it, received whole hearted support of Wiproites.
The chief guests for the Jaago Re! launch were distinguished filmmaker, Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra, Jasmine Shah and Vijay Pamarathi of Jaanagraha and Pratik Kumar – Executive Vice President of Human Resources, Brand and Corporate Communication at Wipro.
The launch witnessed a good turnout of employees who were eager to know more about the campaign. Vijay of Jaanagraha gave a brief presentation on the website www.jaagore.com where people can register themselves and get assistance in almost all maters related to voting.
Speaking on the effectiveness of the Jaago Re! One Billion Votes campaign, Rakeysh narrated how he got involved in this initiative. “When I first heard about the Jaago Re initiative, I was very moved by the magnanimity of this effort,” he said. He further added, “It urges people to not only wake up and participate, but also enables them to register for voting. The whole task of the voting process has been simplified. And, all you have to do now is to press few buttons on your PC. The very fact that Jaago Re! has been recognized by companies like Wipro and by the people at its helm proves its worth. We shouldn’t hush such an initiative; it needs to be shouted out from roof tops.”
Rakeysh also elaborated on the importance of voting and detailed how crucial it is for people to vote, even if it boiled down to choosing the lesser evil. He also mentioned that in the long run, a series of massive and inclusive demonstrations of choice is what would lead us to a better and more complete democracy. The people in the IT sector could make this change happen, since they have already been a part of a changing India, he opined.
I was at PSG Institutions, Coimbatore last week, happily enjoying cultural program hosted by the students on the last day of Elements, - Wipro Week @ PSG.The Last day was dedicated to fun, with Dance, Movie Spoof and Sports. While watching the students perform, a small thought struck my mind, and couldn’t resist sharing…
Life is full of experiences and we learn every single moment. This dance competition too, contributed a little to learning, by correlating management & dance performance. How? Let me explain.
In Elements, Wipro week, we said that the first four days would be hosted by Wipro. We planned to get key senior leaders to interact with students by sharing their experience and knowledge, thru’ modules of Technology, Innovation, VLSI and Culture. The last day was for the students to manage and organise. It was dance competition, we had solo performances & at the end a Group Dance by PSG’s best Dancers. With a billion+ Indians on the planet, why can’t we do better at the Olympics?!!? This is the question that crops up in every Indian’s mind.
The question is best answered in my view by the athletes, and sportsmen who practice in anonymity, striving hard against circumstances pertaining to their sport. It is a daily struggle for each of these athletes who seek support from their family, society and the government. The challenges that they overcome constantly are - Lack of proper training facilities, coaches, gear, equipments. Maybe even the half hearted support from the Govt. compounds their list of woes.
The sad part is that this issue and the awareness of Olympics are only raised just before or after the event. If you look at other countries, they have 4 - 10 year Olympic Plans in place, in which they would chalk out the strategies, schedules etc. with attention to detail. Our Olympic Association/ Government need to wake up from this slumber. Initiatives to encourage youth to take up sports at the grass root level need to be planned and implemented. Every year, Wipro conducts an annual celebration of the culture, values and togetherness of the Wipro family in the form of the Spirit of Wipro Run. Thousands of Wiproites and their families across the country take to the road and participate in either the 4Km short run or the 10 km extended run. This event is unique among corporates, as no other company has ever held such an event on this scale. This year, the event was held on 6th of September, and I was lucky enough to be a part of the Bangalore run for the first time.
I was never a morning or a running sort of person, so the idea of getting up at 6 AM to run long distances on a Saturday morning was never really appealing, which is why I probably missed the run in my first 2 years in Wipro. But somehow this time a mixture of curiosity and the hype around this year’s event prompted me to wake up bright and early, and drag myself to our Sarjapur office where the event was flagged off.
My early morning grumpiness evapourated at the venue, with the sheer enthusiasm and buzz of the 2000-odd Wiproites washing through along with the amazing early morning weather. Continue reading ‘The Spirit of Wipro Run 2008′

As I had shared with you earlier, my earlier stint had been with the Indian Army. If you ever happen to drive down the road which leads into the sprawling 8000 acre valley of Khadakwasla, one comes across a small board hidden behind the bou·gain·vil·le·a bushes that says, “Welcome to the cradle of leadership”.
While my article of my experiences at the National Defence Academy can run into thousands of pages, let me share with you the some words from our daily prayer “Oh God! Help us to do the harder right instead of the easier wrong” We used to recite these words day in and day out each day at 0500h and each day the value got ingrained into our minds.
I am out of the army now and eking my livelihood by working with this distinguished company called Wipro Technologies. I interact with hundreds of young job aspirants each day and my experiences with them are rich and varied. I see a thirst for success in this generation which I did not see 15 yrs ago. I also notice a burning desire in them to create a niche for them selves. While the intentions are good, the methods that are adopted by some to gain employment often leave me pondering whether there is a moral and ethical degradation in the society. The fact cannot be generalized, but there is adequate evidence on record to substantiate such a claim. Continue reading ‘The Harder Right or the Easier Wrong ??’
